Top locations

A unique departure from the typical African safari holiday, Namibia is one of the most beautiful countries on the continent. Vast sandy deserts meet large salt pans and stormy coastal beachfronts, intermixed with great animal sightings and unique cultural experiences. From the soaring sand dunes of Sossusvlei to the unforgiving Skeleton Coast, Namibia is a place that captures the power of nature. In the north, wonderful game spotting at Etosha National Park and Damaraland live alongside ancient rock art and prehistoric forests. In the south you’ll find dramatic landscapes such as Fish River Canyon and Sossusvlei. Across the country, hidden surprises abound around every turn.

A well-connected road network means that Namibia is an easy place for independent travellers looking for a self-drive holiday. It also has tours and itineraries for all budgets.

A landscape unlike any other, Sossusvlei is the name of a particular region of the Namib-Naukluft National Park and the general name used to refer to all of it by travellers. One of the world’s oldest landscapes, this area is a visual feast. From the tallest sand dunes in the world to the incredible vivid colours of the desert, this is an area not to be missed.

Sossusvlei

Located off the northern coast of Mozambique, the 32 idyllic islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago sit amongst the protected waters of some of Mozambique’s most pristine marine environment. Easily accessible from Tanzania, the northern waters off the town of Pemba offer the amazing treasures of the Quirimbas Archipelago, whose islands and coral outcrops lie within the Quirimbas National Park and whose largely unexplored waters provide access to some of the most unspoilt tropical havens anywhere in Africa.

Etosha Waterhole

The second largest canyon in the world, Fish River Canyon dominates the southern landscape and is a major attraction for hikers and trail runners alike. The natural colours of the rock combine with the desert sun for some truly wonderful sights for people of all activity levels.

Hidden gems

Skeleton Coast

Scenic Skeleton Coast

A wild area that feels like the end of the earth, the Skeleton Coast is where the wild Atlantic Ocean meets the harsh and unforgiving deserts of Namibia. Named after the animal bones scattered about the place, from unfortunate land mammals to beached whales, this area is also famous for the bones of the shipwrecks that fell afoul of its dangerous ocean currents. It’s best seen from a scenic flight to take in the scale.

Kolmanskop

Eerie Kolmanskop

Located near the larger (and active) town of Luderitz, Kolmanskop is the ghostly remains of a mining town long surrendered to the desert. A reminder of what would happen if humans were to suddenly disappear, the town is slowly succumbing to the environment and provides some amazing (and eerie) views.

Damaraland

Ancient Damaraland

An area filled with ancient history, Damaraland is a must-see located in between the wild coastline and the animal safaris of nearby Etosha. Ancient rock carvings can be found alongside petrified forests and prehistoric rock formations, with dramatic landscapes forming the perfect backdrop to secret populations of African wildlife.

Caprivi

Compact Caprivi

A long finger extending across Africa, the Caprivi makes up for its width in its offerings. One end reaches towards the barren Etosha National Park, the other to Victoria Falls. In the middle, you have the headwaters of the Okavango Delta, with multiple national parks offering their own unique safaris.

When to go

At The Explorer Society we firmly believe that there is no right or wrong time to go anywhere.
Instead, we think that each time of the year offers different experiences that better suit different travellers.
After all, high and low season often refers to the amount of travellers present, not whether something is ‘good’ or ‘bad’.

If wildlife is your main attraction, seasonality can be important.
If scenery and culture is the major attraction then Namibia is a year-round destination.

November to March

Summer, and mostly low season. The afternoon rainfall comes during this time and promotes green growth and wildflower blooms. This also encourages large numbers of birdlife to visit. However, the sudden abundance of water also means that larger animals are less congregated around the risky waterholes. This will make game viewing tougher, especially around Etosha. Temperatures can be very hot during the day.
April to October

Winter, and a busier season that also coincides with Africa peak season. Dry conditions mean that animals tend to seek out water, making locating them much easier. It is dry and sunny all day with moderate temperatures however, temperatures will be extremely cold overnight.

How long do I need?

Namibia is a deceptively large country. Even if flying from place to place, expect a minimum of seven to eight days. If driving, you will need at least 12 to 14 days to spend enough time at each highlight. Most itineraries, unless transiting from either Botswana or South Africa, involve a large loop originating from and terminating in Windhoek, the capital.

Everyone is different, so please note that these guidelines are general in nature.
Ultimately it will depend on your own expedition’s requirements.

Our planning process

Planning travel should be exciting, but it can be exhausting. There is so much information and so little clarity, you often end up more confused than when you began.

The Why

Sometimes it’s simple and easy to figure out. Sometimes it means asking you more questions and diving deep into your motivations.
