Explorer Recap

We have been writing our Explorer tales for a while now. Like every labour of love, it’s nice to look back every now and then to see what you’ve accomplished.

Explorer Recap

1. Shackleton and Worsley

Our very first explorer tale, this is the story of how these two men used their talents to save the men of the Endurance. It’s one of the most amazing stories in polar exploration.

2. Mary Kingsley

This is an utterly unreal story of a pioneering African explorer. In fact, we struggled to find a way to list all of her amazing adventures, so we had to write it in a suitably dramatic way.

3. The Legend Livingstone

David Livingstone is one of the most famous explorers in history. But, his tale is far more epic and dramatic than most people know, so we wrote it as the mini-series it deserves.

4. Sir Robert Falcon Scott

Scott’s last journey to the Antarctic has been picked over for centuries, and the source of much debate. We decided to look at the hidden details of a well-told tragedy.

5. The Nordenskjold Sagas

One expedition, three disasters, three struggles for survival. One of the most unbelievable polar survival stories there is, and one we can’t believe isn’t more well-known.

6. Gertrude Bell

This is the complicated history of the writer, explorer and archaeologist who discovered ancient ruins and literally drew the borders of the Middle East.

7. Christiane Desroches Noblecourt

The true story of the woman who helped to save Egyptian treasures from the Nazis, and then the incomparable Abu Simbel from a catastrophic flood.

8. The forgotten Amundsen

The story of Roald Amundsen, and a look at why the world has forgotten the first man to the South Pole.

9. Lt. Nobu Shirase

One of our favourite stories of exploration. It is a tale of perseverance and having a go, even when no one else believes in you.

Why travel with us?

Travel isn’t what is used to be. It used to be undertaken with a sense of adventure and discovery. As the world shrunk, so did our imaginations and over time, manufactured experiences, sponsored travel lists and mass tourism have slowly extinguished that magic. Amazing destinations, catering to the crowds, have become overwhelmed shadows of their former selves.

And so, we established The Explorer Society to be a travel company for like‑minded travellers. It’s for those who travel for the destination and the incredible experiences to be found within, not just for the bragging rights. We are passionate about avoiding the crowds and providing real and revelatory experiences.

Honesty

We always try to maintain as open and honest a conversation with you as we can throughout the entire process. We are happy to chat about what we recommend, why, and why we do what we do.

Do good, be good

The destinations we visit should be around for future generations to enjoy. We want the benefits of your visit go to those in the local area you visited, not some big corporation elsewhere.

Value ≠ Cost

What something costs isn’t the same as what something is worth. We always try to get the best value for your trip, irrespective of how you choose to travel and what budget you have.

Experience first

The experience always comes first. This might mean five‑star luxury, three‑star simplicity or a camp out under millions of stars, whatever ultimately best suits the experience you’re after.
